Thượng tọa Thích Huyền Châu là một tu sĩ Phật giáo xuất thân từ vùng đất Tây Sơn – Gia Lai, Việt Nam, nơi gắn liền với hào khí lịch sử của dân tộc và tinh thần anh dũng của Hoàng đế Quang Trung – Nguyễn Huệ. Sinh ra trong một gia tộc mang truyền thống võ tướng, Thầy sớm thừa hưởng khí chất cương trực và chí lớn của bậc anh hùng. Tuy nhiên, giữa dòng chảy mạnh mẽ của tinh thần võ đạo ấy, nơi tâm hồn Thầy lại nảy nở một khát vọng khác – khát vọng tìm về con đường từ bi và trí tuệ của đạo Phật.

Năm mười bốn tuổi, Thầy phát tâm xuất gia nhưng con đường ấy không hề dễ dàng. Hai năm sau đó là những thử thách lớn lao trước những ràng buộc của gia đình và truyền thống dòng tộc; cuối cùng, với chí nguyện kiên định, ngày 20 tháng 11 năm 1992, Thầy chính thức bước vào đời sống phạm hạnh tại chùa Phước Long, Tây Sơn, Gia Lai.

Chùa Phước Long là nơi Thầy được thấm nhuần tư tưởng giáo dục của Quốc sư Phước Huệ – vị danh tăng từng là bậc thầy của ba đời vua triều Nguyễn và là người sáng lập trường đại học Phật giáo đầu tiên tại kinh đô Huế. Dưới ảnh hưởng của truyền thống học thuật ấy, Thầy đã dốc tâm nghiên cứu giáo pháp. Nhờ tư chất thông tuệ và lòng hiếu học, chỉ trong hai năm, Thầy đã ghi nhớ hơn 3.500 bài kinh trong Kinh tạng Pāli của Phật giáo nguyên thủy.

Từ suối nguồn giáo pháp ấy, Thầy nhận ra một chân lý sâu sắc: Đức Phật Thích Ca Mâu Ni không chỉ là bậc giác ngộ, mà còn là một nhà đại giáo dục của nhân loại. Theo quan điểm của Thầy, giáo dục chân chính chính là trao cho con người phương pháp nhận diện và loại trừ những nguyên nhân sinh khởi khổ đau. Khi căn nguyên của khổ đau được đoạn trừ, hạnh phúc chân thật sẽ tự nhiên hiển lộ. Từ nhận thức đó, triết lý giáo dục của Thầy được hình thành: giáo dục phải dẫn con người đến trí tuệ, tự do và giải thoát.

Mùa thu năm 1996, Thầy tiếp tục hành trình tu học tại Tu viện Nguyên Thiều, Gia Lai. Bốn năm khắc khổ nơi thiền môn đã giúp Thầy tiếp cận dòng tuệ giác sâu thẳm từ các bậc cao tăng. Tại đây, Thầy lĩnh hội được tinh thần phụng sự của Phật giáo Đại thừa cùng với tinh thần tùy duyên linh hoạt của Luật tạng Bắc truyền.

Đầu xuân năm 2000, Thầy đến Sài Gòn để tiếp tục tham học trong nhiều môi trường học thuật Phật giáo khác nhau. Thầy dự thính các chương trình như: Cao đẳng Phật học chuyên khoa, Học viện Phật giáo Sài Gòn và chương trình chuyên khoa A Tỳ Đàm. Đồng thời, Thầy theo học chương trình Cử nhân Văn hóa học tại Đại học Văn Hiến, từ đó mở rộng tầm nhìn về các nền văn minh và văn hóa nhân loại.

Năm 2003, Thầy tham gia sáng lập nguyệt san Pháp Luân – một tờ báo độc lập có ảnh hưởng sâu rộng trong giới trí thức Phật giáo đương thời.

Sau gần mười năm trải nghiệm trong môi trường học thuật đa dạng tại Sài Gòn, tháng 9 năm 2009, môn phái Thiền Lâm Tế Chánh Tông đã công cử Thầy kế thừa trụ trì chùa Phước Long. Tưởng như cuộc đời đã an định nơi chốn tổ, nhưng chính nơi đây lại mở ra cho Thầy một hành trình giác ngộ mới – hành trình dấn thân phụng sự xã hội và truyền bá trí tuệ Phật pháp.

Ngày 29 tháng 5 năm 2013, sau khi được Sở Di trú Hoa Kỳ chấp thuận, Thầy rời Việt Nam sang hoằng pháp tại Hoa Kỳ, trước tiên tại chùa Linh Sơn, tiểu bang Massachusetts. Chỉ vài tháng sau, Thầy chuyển sang miền Nam California, nơi cộng đồng Phật tử Việt Nam sinh sống đông đảo, đặc biệt tại thành phố Santa Ana – một trong những trung tâm Phật giáo Việt Nam lâu đời tại Hoa Kỳ.

Nhận thấy nhu cầu học Phật ngày càng lớn trong cộng đồng, đầu xuân năm 2014 Thầy sáng lập Bodhi Buddharealm Society (BBS) – một tổ chức phi lợi nhuận hoạt động với bốn phương châm giáo dục: Thân cận thiện sĩ – Lắng nghe chánh pháp – Như lý tác ý – Pháp tùy pháp hành.

Đến năm 2022, dưới sự lãnh đạo của Thầy, Hội đồng quản trị BBS quyết định thành lập Đại học Sakya Buddha (SBU) như một đơn vị học thuật nhằm thực hiện sứ mệnh giáo dục Phật giáo trong bối cảnh học thuật quốc tế.

Tháng 10 năm 2014, Thầy phát tâm xây dựng cơ sở đầu tiên tại địa chỉ 3404 Westminster Avenue, Santa Ana, California. Nơi đây vốn là một nhà thờ Tin Lành cũ, được Thầy cùng tăng ni và Phật tử chung tay tu sửa để trở thành Viện Phật học Bồ Đề Phật Quốc. Ngày 3 tháng 6 năm 2015, lễ lạc thành được tổ chức với hơn 1.250 tăng ni Phật tử tham dự – một sự kiện được xem như dấu mốc mở đầu cho hành trình phát triển giáo dục Phật giáo tại Hoa Kỳ.

Từ đó, Bồ Đề Phật Quốc vừa là đạo tràng tâm linh, vừa là một trung tâm giáo dục Phật học dành cho cộng đồng. Các lớp Phật học được tổ chức theo hệ thống từ Sơ – Trung đẳng, Cao đẳng, cho đến Chuyên khoa A Tỳ Đàm.

Để mở rộng phương tiện hoằng pháp, ngày 18 tháng 10 năm 2019 Thầy sáng lập kênh truyền hình Bồ Đề Phật Quốc TV (SBU-TV) phát sóng trên băng tần 57.15. Trong thời gian đại dịch Covid-19, kênh truyền hình này đã trở thành nguồn an ủi tinh thần cho cộng đồng Phật tử khắp nơi.

Song song với hoạt động giáo dục, Thầy còn tổ chức năm lần Đại giới đàn truyền trao giới pháp Như Lai, duy trì nghi lễ tụng giới nửa tháng một lần theo truyền thống hơn 2.600 năm của Tăng đoàn Phật giáo.

Trong quá trình phát triển, nhiều cơ sở phụng sự được hình thành:

• Năm 2020: Tiếp nhận Văn phòng AI-Dhamar tại 18042 Villa Park Road, Villa Park Road, CA 92861.
• Năm 2021: Lập Ni viện Nội trú tại 14052 Flower St., Garden Grove, CA 92843
• Năm 2022: Lập khu thương mại Santa Ana Mini Mall, tại 3412 Westminster Ave, Santa Ana, CA 92703.
• Năm 2023: Lập Tăng Viện Nội trú tại 9631 Stanford Ave, Garden Grove, CA 92841
• Năm 2024 Lập Ký Túc Xá cho Sinh viên tại 7782 Trask Ave, Westminster, CA 92683

Gần một thập niên hoạt động tại Hoa Kỳ, Thầy đã quy tụ được nhiều học giả và trí thức Phật giáo tham gia giảng dạy, tạo nên nền tảng vững chắc cho hệ thống giáo dục của Đại học Sakya Buddha. Những đóng góp của Thầy trong lĩnh vực giáo dục và phục vụ cộng đồng đã được Dân biểu Hoa Kỳ: Ro Khanna ghi nhận là “outstanding and invaluable” – xuất sắc và vô giá.

Trong hơn ba thập niên phụng sự, Thầy đã truyền giảng hơn 3.000 bài pháp thoại và biên soạn hơn 20 tác phẩm Phật học. Tất cả đều hướng đến một lý tưởng giản dị nhưng sâu sắc: “Hãy trao cho con người phương pháp loại bỏ những nguyên nhân sinh khởi khổ đau, để khổ đau không còn cơ hội xuất hiện trong đời sống”. Đó chính là con đường giáo dục mà Thượng tọa Thích Huyền Châu đã và đang thực hiện mỗi ngày.

Venerable Thich Huyen Chau

Venerable Thich Huyen Chau is a Buddhist monk originating from the Tay Son region of Gia Lai Province, Vietnam, a land closely associated with the heroic spirit of the Vietnamese nation and the legacy of Emperor Quang Trung – Nguyen Hue. Born into a family with a long tradition of military leadership, he inherited the upright character and ambitious spirit of heroic figures. Yet within this strong martial heritage, another aspiration arose in his heart—the aspiration to follow the path of compassion and wisdom taught by the Buddha.

At the age of fourteen, he developed the aspiration to enter monastic life, though the path was not easy. The following two years were marked by significant challenges due to family expectations and traditional obligations. Finally, with unwavering determination, on November 20, 1992, he formally entered the monastic life at Phuoc Long Temple in Tay Son, Gia Lai.

Phuoc Long Temple was the place where he absorbed the educational philosophy of National Master Phuoc Hue—a renowned Buddhist scholar who served as teacher to three emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty and who founded the first Buddhist university in Hue, Vietnam. Influenced by this scholarly tradition, Venerable Thich Huyen Chau devoted himself to the study of the Dharma. Because of his strong intellectual capacity and diligence in learning, within only two years he had memorized more than 3,500 discourses from the Pāli Canon of early Buddhism.

From this source of Buddhist teachings, he came to recognize a profound truth: the Buddha Shakyamuni was not only an awakened being but also one of the greatest educators of humanity. In his understanding, true education provides people with the methods to identify and eliminate the causes of suffering. When the roots of suffering are removed, genuine happiness naturally emerges. From this realization, his educational philosophy took shape: education must guide human beings toward wisdom, freedom, and liberation.

In the autumn of 1996, he continued his monastic training at Nguyen Thieu Monastery in Gia Lai, Vietnam. During four years of disciplined practice and study, he gained access to the deep stream of wisdom transmitted by senior monastic teachers. During this period he also absorbed the spirit of compassionate service in Mahāyāna Buddhism along with the flexible and adaptive spirit of the Northern Vinaya tradition.

In early spring of 2000, he traveled to Saigon to pursue further Buddhist studies in several academic settings. He attended programs at Giac Hoa Temple, including Advanced Buddhist Studies programs, the Saigon Buddhist Academy, and the Abhidhamma Specialized Program. At the same time, he studied Cultural Studies at Van Hien University, which broadened his perspective on global civilizations and cultures.

In 2003, he co-founded the monthly publication Phap Luan, an independent journal that became influential among Buddhist intellectual circles of the time.

After nearly a decade of academic experience in Saigon, in September 2009 the Lin-Chi Chan Buddhist lineage appointed him to succeed as abbot of Phuoc Long Temple. What seemed at first to be the closing of an academic journey instead became the beginning of a new path of awakening—one rooted in social engagement and the transmission of Buddhist wisdom to the wider community.

On May 29, 2013, after receiving approval from the United States Immigration authorities, he left Vietnam to teach the Dharma in the United States, initially at Linh Son Temple in Massachusetts. A few months later he moved to Southern California, where a large Vietnamese Buddhist community resides, particularly in the city of Santa Ana—one of the earliest centers of Vietnamese Buddhism in the United States.

Recognizing the growing need for Buddhist education within the community, in early spring 2014 he founded Bodhi Buddharealm Society (BBS), a nonprofit organization dedicated to four principles of education:

• Association with virtuous teachers
• Listening to the true Dharma
• Reflecting with right understanding
• Practicing the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma

In 2022, under his leadership, the Board of Directors of BBS decided to establish Sakya Buddha University (SBU) as an academic institution dedicated to carrying forward this educational mission within the global academic environment.

In October 2014 he began establishing the first institutional facility at 3404 Westminster Avenue, Santa Ana, California. The building was originally an abandoned Protestant church, which he and the Buddhist community carefully renovated to become the Bodhi Buddharealm Institute. The inauguration ceremony took place on June 3, 2015 with more than 1,250 monastics and Buddhist followers attending—an event widely regarded as the beginning of a new era of Buddhist education in the United States.

Since its founding, Bodhi Buddharealm has functioned both as a spiritual temple and as a Buddhist educational center for the community. Structured Buddhist education programs have been offered progressively at several levels, including introductory, intermediate, advanced, and specialized Abhidhamma programs.

To expand the reach of Dharma teaching, on October 18, 2019 he launched Bodhi Buddharealm Television (SBU-TV) broadcasting on Channel 57.15. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this television channel became an important source of spiritual support for Buddhist communities across many regions.

In addition to educational activities, he has organized five major ordination ceremonies conferring the sacred precepts of the Buddha, and continues to maintain the traditional fortnightly recitation of monastic precepts—a sacred practice preserved for more than 2,600 years within the Buddhist Sangha.

As the institution developed, additional facilities were gradually established:

• 2022: Acquisition of Santa Ana Mini Mall at 3412 Westminster Avenue, Santa Ana, CA
• 2023: Residential Monastic Institute at 9631 Stanford Avenue, Garden Grove, CA
• 2024: Student Housing Residence at 7782 Trask Avenue, Westminster, CA

After nearly a decade of work in the United States, he has brought together many Buddhist scholars and community intellectuals to participate in teaching and institutional development, forming the academic foundation of Sakya Buddha University. His educational contributions and service to the community have been recognized by U.S. Congressman Ro Khanna, who described his work as “outstanding and invaluable.”

For more than three decades of dedicated service, he has delivered over 3,000 Dharma lectures and authored more than 20 Buddhist publications. All of these works share a single guiding ideal:

To provide human beings with the knowledge and methods to eliminate the causes of suffering so that suffering may never arise again in life.

This vision represents the educational path that Venerable Thich Huyen Chau continues to pursue every day.
